In addition to having a sense of smell that is 10,000 to 100,000 times more powerful than humans, dogs possess a special organ called the Jacobsen’s organ or vomeronasal organ, located on the roof of their mouth. This organ allows them to detect pheromones and other chemical signals that are imperceptible to us. Thanks to this ability, dogs can gather complex information, such as the emotional state of other animals (or people), identify marked territories, and even detect serious diseases like cancer, diabetes, or infections in their owners. This is why dogs are used in tasks such as medical detection, search and rescue, and police tracking. A natural superpower that makes them our most valuable allies!
