Abandoned Dogs Struggle to Survive on Shell Island in Cebu

On Shell Island, Cebu, dozens of abandoned dogs battle hunger and harsh conditions, largely ignored by those passing by. Dondon Demicillio, a local caretaker, has been feeding the dogs for nearly seven years, despite receiving no salary or external support. Alongside Janice Palermo, a rescue worker, he helps save as many dogs as possible. On April 22, they launched a mission to rescue some of these animals, managing to secure five adult dogs and 16 puppies. The island’s dogs, many abandoned by workers during the construction of the nearby CCLEX bridge or by owners who could no longer care for them, face a life of scrounging for food, with some even drowning in high tides. While some dogs were too frightened to approach the rescuers, those that were saved will be taken to Janice’s shelter in Carcar City, where they will receive medical care, be spayed or neutered, and get a second chance at life. Despite limited resources, rescue efforts continue, with Janice already caring for nearly 200 dogs in her shelter. The plight of the dogs on Shell Island highlights the growing problem of abandoned pets in the country and the tireless efforts of individuals dedicated to their well-being.
