Endangered axolotl discovered under Welsh bridge, likely abandoned by owner

A rare axolotl, a critically endangered Mexican salamander, was found under the Dipping Bridge in Merthyr Mawr, Wales, last weekend. Discovered by 10-year-old Evie Hill, the 22cm amphibian is believed to have been an abandoned pet. Experts suggest that it is highly unlikely the axolotl ended up there by accident, with the most probable explanation being that it was released by an inexperienced owner. The axolotl, known for its regenerative abilities and neoteny (remaining in a juvenile state throughout its life), is native to Lake Xochimilco near Mexico City. Its increasing popularity as a pet, partly due to internet memes and games like Pokémon, has led to an influx of these creatures into homes. However, many owners, unprepared for the commitment, struggle with their care, leading to axolotls being abandoned or surrendered. In the case of Dippy, the axolotl had injuries consistent with a predator attack, and its new owners are documenting its recovery. Animal welfare experts stress that anyone unable to care for an axolotl should contact a rescue centre rather than releasing it into the wild. Axolotls can live for up to 20 years and grow to the size of a small cat, making them a long-term commitment for pet owners.
