New Study Explains How Cats Use Flexible Spines to Land on Their Feet
A recent study published in The Anatomical Record sheds new light on the long-standing ‘falling cat problem,’ explaining why cats can almost always land on their feet. Led by physiologist Yasuo Higurashi at Yamaguchi University, the research shows that cats possess a highly flexible section in their upper thoracic spine, allowing them to twist their upper bodies independently from their lower bodies while in midair. This flexibility enables cats to first rotate their front legs and torso to face the ground, then adjust their hind legs accordingly, supporting the ‘legs in, legs out’ model of feline aerial maneuvering. The study also found evidence of a right-side turning bias in cats, with some animals consistently turning right during falls. These findings help clarify the biomechanics behind a cat’s acrobatic ability, highlighting that their unique spinal structure is central to this skill. While more research is needed to fully confirm which of the existing models is correct, the results provide compelling biomechanical evidence explaining the feline midair rotation that has fascinated humans for centuries.
