RSPCA rescues over 250 dogs from overcrowded UK home

The RSPCA has rescued more than 250 poodle-cross dogs from a single residence in the UK, after the situation spiralled out of control due to challenging family circumstances. A photograph taken by a rescuer showing dozens of dogs crowded into a living room has sparked disbelief online, with some suggesting it was AI-generated. The RSPCA confirmed the image is real and reflects the reality of multi-animal cases, which have surged by 70% in England and Wales since 2021. In the past year, the charity responded to 4,200 incidents involving at least ten animals per address. RSPCA Superintendent Jo Hirst highlighted that such cases are increasingly common, with reports of 10, 20, and even 100 animals in a single household. The owners were extremely vulnerable, and the charity deemed prosecution inappropriate. Factors contributing to such situations may include mental health challenges, the cost of living crisis, and poor breeding practices. Poodle-crosses, or ‘doodles,’ have become especially popular in recent years. Of the 250 dogs rescued, 87 were taken by the RSPCA, while the remainder went to the Dogs Trust. Dogs taken in by the RSPCA were relocated to centres across Hertfordshire, Surrey, Norfolk, and Nottinghamshire for rehoming. Two dogs, Stevie and Sandy, are awaiting adoption together due to Stevie’s blindness and deafness.
