Study Identifies Genetic Basis of Purring in Domestic Cats
A recent study from Kyoto University has uncovered genetic factors that may explain why domestic cats purr. Led by biologist Yume Okamoto, the research analyzed DNA and behavioral data from 280 domestic cats, revealing that those with a shorter version of the androgen receptor gene were more likely to purr and be vocal with humans. This gene affects testosterone-related behaviors, including vocalizations. Interestingly, this long-type gene variant, associated with less vocal behavior, is found only in domestic cats and not in their wild relatives like the fishing cat or leopard cat. This suggests that the gene variation may have developed during the domestication process. The study also found that pure-bred cats are more likely to possess this long-type gene, possibly due to their dependence on human care rather than vocal communication. These findings support the idea that purring has social functions, such as seeking attention or signaling need, and could even relate to healing processes, as cats also purr when injured. The research deepens our understanding of feline behavior and aims to foster stronger human-cat relationships. The study was published in the journal PLOS One.
