Study Shows Telehealth Enhances Home Care for Cats with Arthritis

A new study from the University of California, Davis, reveals that telehealth can significantly benefit cats with chronic mobility issues, particularly feline arthritis. The research involved 106 pet owners across the U.S. and Canada, comparing those who participated in video telehealth visits to a control group who did not. Cats in the test group received six video consultations over four months, during which non-medical advice was given to improve home environments and care strategies. Common suggestions included using elevated food and water dishes, larger litter boxes, and adding ramps or steps. Most participants (over 95%) expressed willingness to pay for such services, even if they were slightly less expensive than in-person visits. The researchers found telehealth visits reduced the stress associated with traditional vet visits, allowing professionals to observe cats in their natural environments and provide tailored advice. While telehealth doesn’t replace medical care, it effectively supplements it and strengthens the relationship between pet owners and veterinary professionals. The study emphasizes the growing role of virtual consultations in veterinary support and explores the potential for telehealth to address other chronic feline conditions like obesity and disease prevention.
