FDA-Approved Stem Cell Therapy for Pets Could Revolutionize Veterinary Medicine

San Diego-based startup Gallant has secured $18 million in funding to introduce the first FDA-approved ready-to-use stem cell therapy for veterinary medicine. This innovative approach could offer a new solution to treat pets, starting with Feline Chronic Gingivostomatitis (FCGS), a painful condition in cats. The therapy aims to provide a more convenient alternative to current stem cell treatments, which typically involve harvesting cells from the patient or donor animals. Gallant’s therapy uses pre-harvested donor cells from different species, simplifying the process. This approach has already shown positive results in treating conditions like arthritis in dogs, with pain relief and improved mobility lasting up to two years. However, outcomes for kidney disease treatments in cats have been mixed. Gallant’s therapy could pave the way for a wider range of treatments for pets and potentially improve their quality of life. The company has raised $44 million to date and is targeting FDA approval for its first treatment by early 2026.
