Genetic Discovery Explains Why Most Ginger Cats Are Male

Scientists from Kyushu University in Japan and Stanford University in the US have identified a genetic variation that explains the distinct orange coloring in ginger cats, which are predominantly male. The research revealed that a segment of the ARHGAP36 gene is missing in ginger cats, which increases the gene’s activity in melanocytes—the cells that determine pigmentation in skin, eyes, and fur. This higher activity results in lighter pigmentation. Since the gene is located on the X chromosome, male cats, having only one X chromosome, are more likely to exhibit the trait when the mutation is present. Female cats, on the other hand, have two X chromosomes and need both to have the mutation to be fully ginger, which explains the common mixed-color appearance in females. The study was funded through crowdfunding, with contributions from cat lovers worldwide. Researchers also noted that the ARHGAP36 gene is active in other parts of the body, like the brain and hormonal glands, raising questions about potential links to health or behavior. The findings could not only deepen understanding of feline genetics but also contribute to research into cat diseases and perhaps human conditions, as the gene is also found in humans.
