Astrophotographer Creates Space-Themed Photos Featuring His Adopted Cat

Astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy, known for his stunning space imagery, has combined his passion for astrophotography with his love for his adopted cat, Gregory. Instead of his usual outdoor setups, McCarthy conducted this unique photo series indoors, covering Gregory’s cat tree with black fabric to simulate space scenes. The photos depict Gregory interacting playfully with representations of celestial bodies, including the Sun and Saturn, and even serving as a creative embodiment of the solar system. McCarthy explains that each photo was inspired either by observing Gregory’s behavior or by envisioning how a cat would engage with his space images. The series has been compiled into a calendar, with proceeds going to the animal shelter from which he adopted Gregory. McCarthy adopted Gregory after losing a beloved cat in 2023, and the new companion had been at the shelter for over three months. By selling the calendar, McCarthy aims to donate $10,000 to the shelter, supporting animals in need. The calendar and more of McCarthy’s work are available on his website and social media platforms.
