Study Reveals How Cats Use Their Spines to Land Safely

Researchers at Yamaguchi University in Japan have uncovered new insights into how cats manage to land on their feet after falling. The study, published in The Anatomical Record, focuses on the mechanical properties of the feline spine, revealing a key difference between the thoracic and lumbar regions. The thoracic spine is highly flexible, capable of rotating about 50 degrees with minimal effort, while the lumbar spine is stiffer and acts as a stabilizing anchor. This difference allows cats to perform a precise midair righting maneuver: the front of the body rotates first, followed by the back, enabling cats to reorient themselves and land safely. The team used both mechanical tests on the spines of deceased cats and high-speed camera recordings of live cats dropping onto soft cushions to reach these conclusions. Beyond explaining this well-known feline skill, the findings could have practical applications in veterinary medicine for treating spinal injuries and inspire designs for more agile robots. The study highlights the importance of the sequential rotation of the spine in feline agility and provides a clearer understanding of how cats defy what seems like gravity-defying behavior.
