Essential Winter Tips for Keeping Babies, Pets, and Homes Warm

As winter sets in, with snow and ice warnings in the UK, it’s crucial to keep babies, children, and pets safe and warm. Babies and young children, especially those under five, are particularly vulnerable in cold weather. The NHS recommends dressing babies in several layers, including a hat and mittens, and advises against using thick coats in cars due to safety concerns. For nighttime, a room temperature of 16-20°C (61-68°F) is ideal, and babies should sleep in a sleepsuit or a sleeping bag without extra blankets. Additionally, winter infections like flu and norovirus are more common during colder months, so it’s important to practice good hygiene and take advantage of vaccines if eligible. Pets also need extra care; animals can suffer from hypothermia, so ensure they have enough bedding and, if needed, bring outdoor pets indoors during extreme temperatures. When walking dogs, especially elderly or sick ones, a winter coat may be necessary. To heat your home effectively, consider using dehumidifiers instead of turning on the heating, as this can be more energy-efficient. Drivers should avoid using boiling water to de-ice cars and instead opt for safer methods like using de-icer and clearing snow with a soft brush. Finally, when using portable heaters or electric blankets, safety should be a top priority to prevent fire hazards and carbon monoxide poisoning.
