Study Finds Cats Prefer Sleeping on Their Left Side for Better Threat Detection

A recent study published in the journal Current Biology sheds light on why many cats seem to favor sleeping on their left side. Researchers from several international institutions, including the University of Bari Aldo Moro and Ruhr University Bochum, analyzed hundreds of YouTube videos of cats sleeping. They found that approximately two-thirds of the cats preferred sleeping on their left side. The study suggests that this behavior could be linked to the brain’s lateralization of functions, particularly in threat detection. The left side of the body, when used for sleeping, allows cats to process potential dangers more efficiently as their right hemisphere, responsible for spatial awareness and quick escape responses, dominates their left visual field. The researchers believe this behavior may have evolved as a survival strategy. Cats are known to sleep in elevated positions, which protect them from threats, and the study adds a new layer of understanding to the cat’s sleep habits. By preferring the left side, cats may be better prepared to react quickly to any danger upon waking.
