Dogs may not judge human kindness as we thought

A recent study from Kyoto University challenges the popular belief that dogs can judge human character based on kindness. The study, conducted with 40 pet dogs, involved observing dogs as they watched two humans interacting with another dog—one was generous and fed the dog, while the other was not. Despite this indirect observation, the dogs did not show a clear preference for the human who had fed the other dog. Similarly, when dogs interacted directly with both humans, their behavior did not favor the generous individual. These findings suggest that dogs might not form reputations of humans as expected, and their social evaluations may be more complex or nuanced. The study emphasizes the methodological difficulties in capturing dogs’ understanding and evaluation of humans. The research raises the possibility that dogs’ social judgment capabilities might not be as straightforward as previously assumed, and further studies involving a wider range of dog populations could shed more light on this aspect of canine cognition.
