Hunter Survives UTV Crash in Remote Mountains Thanks to His Dog’s Help

Jake Schmitt, a hunting guide from Utah, found himself in a life-threatening situation after crashing his UTV in the Uinta Mountains on July 20, 2025. The crash left Schmitt with shattered ankles, broken ribs, and a severely damaged leg. Despite the terrifying ordeal, his loyal dog, Buddy, played a crucial role in his survival. Schmitt crawled for over 11 hours across rugged terrain, with Buddy staying close by, offering support and encouragement. After managing to splint his leg with duct tape and metal, Schmitt continued to crawl until he reached his truck the following morning. Although physically unable to walk, he managed to drive to a nearby diner to get help. Schmitt’s bond with Buddy proved vital, both emotionally and physically, as the dog kept him going throughout the ordeal. Eventually, Schmitt received medical treatment, and after a week in the hospital, Buddy was reunited with him, bringing an emotional moment for both. Schmitt credits Buddy with saving his life, stating that without the dog’s presence, he might not have made it through mentally or spiritually.
